This is a call for papers for a special issue of Scandinavian Economic History Review on the evolution of the retail trade (including wholesale and logistics) and consumption from the 19th to the 21st century. At a time of rapid and global change and modernisation in retailing and consumption, examining long-term patterns and the drivers of change is highly relevant. Submitted papers should relate to one of three main sub-themes:

- Retailers and consumers: Papers could address retailer-consumer relations, at marketing strategies, at consumer behaviour or at consumers’ perception and reception of retail innovations.

- Public policy and the retail industry: Papers could report on different aspects of retail sector regulation, from policy-making to its implementation. This encompasses research on national legislations, on local town planning and also on the role of trade unions and trade associations.

- Management, organisation and innovation in the retail industry: Papers could explore innovations and changes in both technology and organisation, either looking at the sector in its entirety or at one particular store or company. This could, for example, address issues raised by the diffusion of self-service in the 20th century or e-commerce in more recent decades.

Aside from the editorial team of SEHR this special issue will have two co-editors, Associate Professor Fredrik Sandgren, Department of Economic History, Uppsala University, Sweden and doctoral student Tristan Jacques, University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne/IDHES, France.
